It was sunny so we might as well grill....

Finally, no takeout! It was pretty nice outside considering how cold it was the past few days, it was nice enough to grill. Found a recipe at epicurious.com for an Asian-style Flank Steak that looked good. A snap to put together, and lots of great flavors! I forgot to use the marinade as a sauce. It ended up in the sink. I made Spicy Cold Soba Noodles and it's a good thing it's a forgiving recipe. I missed on the directions there, too! I remember back in Junior High School, I think, there was this one test the teacher gave, about reading the directions or something, and if you did it right and read the whole thing, you found out the directions were to do nothing? Well, obviously I failed that one, following directions, needs work :) The noodles still tasted good. So did the steak! Next time I'd make the sauce! and read the directions!

Asian-style Flank Steak

Bon Appetit - November 2006

1/2 cup dry Sherry
1/3 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger
1 tablespoon Asian sesame oil
1 (1 1/2- to 1 3/4-pound) flank steak

Whisk first 6 ingredients in 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish. Add steak; turn to coat. Let marinate at room temperature 2 hours, turning occasionally.

Preheat broiler. Transfer steak to broiler pan. Drain marinade from dish into medium saucepan; boil 3 minutes. Broil steak until cooked to desired doneness, about 4 minutes per side for medium-rare. Using tongs, transfer steaks to platter; let stand 5 minutes. Cut crosswise into thin slices and serve, passing cooked marinade as sauce.

Stir-fry Green Beans with Red Peppers and Almonds
This one I just threw together with a little sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger and minced garlic.

  1. Food looks delicious and the photos fabulous! Very sharp lol. I love marinated grilled meat. You can just hardly ever go wrong. I'd love your green beans too. No grilling here today. It's 5pm and I still haven't figured out what I'm feeding Randy for dinner. I've run out of appetizer leftovers so I gotta get crackin.

  2. Carol, you may be the take out queen, but when you cook, you go all out. Good looking steak and I bet the sauce would have made it even better! ;-)

  3. No dull girl here! Great shots, Carol. My whole family loves flank steak, although we call it Flagstaff here. Just a family silliness from our Arizona vacation days.

My recipe is a Teriyaki marinade that sounds very similar but without the ketchup and with minced garlic. I like the sound of sherry in your recipe. I will have to try your recipe to compare them.

    Beautiful beans!

  4. Thanks, ladies! It was a nice dinner, even better that we all got to sit down together after a long week!

It was really good, but I would have liked to have had the sauce. Next time.

Susan, can you send me the teriyaki recipe? Thanks :)

  6. Carol, two posts in one day.... You're an overachiever even if you don't always read the directions.

I love flank steak but usually only have it with fajitas. ... Yours is cooked perfectly (at least for me).

I often ( that's a relative term around here) fix green beans like yours. I buy the huge bags of frozen ones at Costco. John loves them.

How wonderful that your dad is home!

  8. Why mess with directions when things turn out that good !!! I have never used flank steak before, but have heard all of you talking about it!

The green beans are a fav..love the fresh ones from the garden but the frozen ones are getting to be just as good.

    Great photos...

Glad your Dad is home and were able to all get together..

  9. I thought I had posted a comment already but I guess I didn't. Your steak looks great - we love flank steak - its really the only one we use for a "london broil" style dinner.

  11. Carol, your photos are supberb! We grilled steaks last evening, since we are having a heat wave here. Well, if you consider 50 being a heat wave :-)

  13. This is a beautiful flank steak. I usually have flank steak in Chinese restaurants where they never cook it this rare. I would like it this way.

  14. You know Carol, we had temps. in the 60s yesterday. Yes, it lasted only one day, but what a gloriously sunny and wonderful day it was.
Still, grilling will have to wait a little while longer and when I finally get around to it, I'm going to make this and think of you and smile.

  15. Hiya, Sol and Debbie :) heat wave here again. Freezing one day, 50's next. Grilling for Valentine's Day! Skirt steaks!

Michelle, how are you? yes, long time! Off to check your blog, it's been a while!

Hilary, the restaurants here sometimes bring out meat so pink, you'd swear they never put heat to it :)

Hi, Kevin, thanks for stopping by! I love you blog!

Annie, London Broil confuses me. We used to get a fantastic minute steak London Broil form a butcher years ago but we never knew the cut so we can never seem to find it. Seems it was probably a name he came up with or something!

Barb, thanks about my dad! LOL, directions are always a mess for me!

Cynthia, overachiever just for one weekend, I missed a week, I can post on the weekends now I guess.

Marsha, really easy, just wing it with the soy sauce and sesame oil.
