More Garden Party...

Doing another Garden Party post, it's another nice day, so of course why cook when I can send The Griller outside to do the dirty work! Just promise him a Hebrew National hot dog while grilling and he's in! These are the good kind from the butcher, the ones in links. THE ONES WITH SNAP! You'll never eat a packaged one again.

I managed to find some really nice heirloom tiny tomatoes at Trader Joe's the other day. Went to epicurious to see what they had as far as cherry tomatoes, and found a nice recipe. Followed what a reviewer said and added some fresh basil, some fresh mozzarella! The basil was from my garden, we had a guest tonight so it must constitute some kind of a small Garden Party! Check out Susan's Garden Party here! Lots of fun posts that linked up to Susan's event!

Red Bell Pepper and Tomato Salad

source: Bon Appétit, recipe by Dorie Greenspan
Makes 4 servings
Printable Recipe

24 grape or cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup 1/4-inch cubes red bell pepper
1/3 cup 1/4-inch cubes drained roasted red pepper from jar
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon white wine vinegar
Pinch of ground cumin (I used way more than a pinch!)

Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Season salad with salt and pepper. (Can be made 3 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature, tossing occasionally.)

notes: I added fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, red onions and Kalamata olives! Also used orange and yellow peppers instead of red.

From my container garden, soon to be a Lemon Boy tomato.

  1. Carol ... how many people were you feeding? That's a lot of meat. Great Garden Party post ... I like your additions to D. Greenspan's salad. Kalamata olives and mozzarella could only make it better.

  2. That is some grill full of meat!!!
And your basil looks so good, something is eating mine..I should just plant it in a pot instead of the ground I guess...:(
Looks like you will have great tomatoes soon!

  3. LOL, I always make too much! but better than not enough. We were total of 8. and some leftover steak for a salad for lunch tomorrow. and sausage on a baguette!

Kathleen, I use the pots because of the dogs, your favorites will fertilize otherwise, I'd think! I'll probably end up with maybe 7 or 8 tomatoes, the plants look pretty lousy!

  4. That is one grill full of meat - what is all rolled up? It looks like some kind of sausage but I would never be able to eat it because it is coiled like a snake :)

I love this salad - the ingredients sound fabulous and the picture is perfect - definitely not dull~

  7. Carol, your version sounds much better than Dorie's! I grew Lemon Boys this year. Great production, but not a lot of flavor. Hope your results are different.

  10. How could your basil and tomatoes look like that in the middle of July?

Well, regardless of the fact that I'll have to buy mine, I'm still making that salad, and you can't stop me!

    Killer shot, my dear.
