Revisiting an old favorite!

So in between the 10 and 20 degree days we have managed to get a few warm ones thrown in, just to throw us off track! Today is one of those days! So what else to do but grill? We'll be having this noodle dish from City Cuisine. It was originally posted by Jessy at the Cooking Forum. It's been a favorite for quite some time. This picture was from a barbecue we had, but I like to see what a finished dish will look like so I included it in the post! It is a super easy and quick side to any meal. Loads of flavor, sweet and spicy! I'm marinating a flank steak along with whatever else I can come up with by dinner time. It's been a nice relaxing, lazy day!

Spicy Cold Soba Noodles
From City Cuisine by Mary Sue Miliken and Susan Feniger
Printable Recipe

1/3 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon molasses
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup tahini
1/4 cup sesame oil
1/4 cup chili oil
3 tablespoon balsamic or red wine vinegar
1/2 bunch thinly sliced scallions, white and green
1/2 lb soba noodles

Place soy sauce in a pan over high heat and reduce by half. Turn heat to low, stir in molasses, and warm briefly. Transfer to a serving bowl. Add brown sugar through scallions and whisk to combine.

Bring a large pot of water to boil. Add noodles; bring back to a boil, and cook, stirring occasionally, until they just begin to soften, about three minutes.

Have a large bowl of iced water ready. Drain noodles, plunge in iced water, and drain again (I just rinse with cold water in the colander). Transfer noodles to the serving bowl that has the sauce, toss well and chill.

  1. Look at you..grilling! I hate to lift the lid of my grill. It sometimes gets scary in the winter. Your noodles look great and I know we'd love them here. Pretty plate too!! Is that yours? It's the same color as my most recent new ones. I am still deciding what's for dinner. Chicken something I think.

  2. Is that like hitting someone with a wet noodle??
Can I heat mine up? I have a thing about cold pasta and soup!
And a grilled steak sounds great!
Not so toasty out here, very windy and in the low 40's...but sunny, so that's a good thing!

  3. It's breezy here, Kathleen and sunny. but warm enough to grill! Poor Larry will be standing in puddle of what was last weeks snow storm :)

It's good warm, too! Make it as spicy as you like.

Suzy, the plate is my friend's. It has olive tones in it. Very pretty set. We grill in the winter sometimes, on a nice sunny day. Good change of pace. and it's not takeout :)

  4. Carol, we're in the 40's today and I'm not complaining. We hit record highs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday ... low 70's. You can imagine what I didn't do....cook. Although John did grill one night, We went to the zoo, and two different lakes.

Kathleen, asked my question about heating up the noodles. What do you think?? After reading the directions, I think that they might be gooey.

  5. It's good warm, Cynthia and Kathleen, just pour the warm sauce over the noodles, mix it in and serve. Don't chill it, it'll be nice and warm, but not hot. I never tried heating it up. but it was really good warm.

LOL, I know you weren't cooking :) My kind of gal :) The zoo, that's fun!
